Butler Hospital is the only private, nonprofit adult, adolescent and child psychiatric and substance abuse hospital in Rhode Island. Located in Providence, Butler also serves Southeastern New England. Founded in 1844, it was the first hospital in Rhode Island. It is recognized as a national leader in short-term, acute care services. Butler has a reputation for providing excellent care, and received a nearly perfect score (99) from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in 2000.
Affiliated with Brown Medical School, there are important teaching and research programs taking place that greatly enhance the level of care and professional expertise at the hospital. As part of Care New England Health System, Butler can also take advantage of a variety of medical experts.

- Cultural Psychiatry Program (Hispanic and Portuguese)

A National Leader
The hospital has been in the forefront of new developments in psychiatry including:
- Opened one of the first outpatient programs in the late 1950s
- Opened the first Partial Hospital substance abuse program in the early 1970s
- Developed the first partial hospital program to be funded by Blue Cross in the early 1970s
- An average length of stay of 8 days which is well below the national average
Caring, Professionally Trained Staff
The hospital employs approximately 700 full-time and part-time clinical and non-clinical staff who are dedicated to treating people with dignity and respect. More than 80 volunteers assist the staff in nearly all departments.
