Our Mission
The Butler Hospital Memory & Aging Program is dedicated to developing new treatments that improve the quality of life for patients with dementia and their families.
About Our Program
The Butler Hospital Memory & Aging Program is located on the Butler Hospital campus in Providence, RI (USA) and is affiliated with the Brown Medical School. The Memory Disorders Program aims to assist individuals with memory problems and their families. The program provides state-of-the-art assessment and treatment of memory disorders and is dedicated to developing new treatments for Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. The program is also dedicated to training medical residents, neuropsychology interns, and post-doctoral fellows from the Brown Medical School. This website provides information about the causes and treatment of memory loss and describes the services we offer. The website also contains information about our research and clinical research training opportunities.
Are Memory Disorders Common?
Everyone experiences some decline in their memory ability as they get older. Some people, however, experience abnormal memory loss that interferes with their ability to carry out normal daily activities. Dementia is a serious form of memory loss and impairment daily functioning. Dementia is also associated with changes in a person's personality and behavior. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. Over 100,000 people in Rhode Island and Eastern Massachusetts have Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, large numbers of people suffer from dementia due to other causes. It is important to note, however, that not everyone who has memory problems has dementia and a careful and thorough assessment is often needed to determine if a memory problem actually exists, and if so, how mild or severe it is.
A Tradition of Caring
Butler Hospital has been providing specialized evaluation and treatment for seniors in a safe and supportive environment for many years. The Memory & Aging Program is just one of a wide range of health services designed to address the cognitive and behavioral problems of older patients. Other services include outpatient psychiatric care, geriatric assessment team, partial hospitalization (day hospital), and inpatient hospitalization.
