Butler Hospital holds 164th Annual Meeting
01/16/08
At Butler Hospital's 164th Annual Meeting held on January 15, 2008, Dean T. Holt, Chairman of the Board, reported that the hospital had far exceeded its budget expectations for the 2006/2007 fiscal year, ending the year with a gain from operations of close to $1.6 million. Dean also reported that the hospital provided $1.9 million in uncompensated care.

Two new trustees were appointed to Butler Hospital’s Board. Robert G. Padula was elected to serve a two-year term, and John J. McNamee, CPA, was elected to a one-year term. Seven current trustees were appointed for three year terms, and 15 new members were appointed to the Butler Hospital Corporation.

Hospital President and CEO Patricia Ryan Recupero, JD, MD, gave a dynamic presentation on Butler’s contributions to brain science research in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University. Dr. Recupero highlighted scientific discoveries researchers had made in advancing the underlying biological indicators for brain-based diseases such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

Also at the meeting, several people were honored for their contributions to Butler Hospital and the field of psychiatry. Felice Freyer, medical writer for The Providence Journal, was presented with the fifth annual Lila M. Sapinsley Community Service Award for her award-winning articles on mental health issues which has helped to reduce the stigma of mental illness. Psychiatrist C. Brandon Qualls, MD, was honored with the first annual Robert J. Westlake, MD, Award for Physician Excellence for his many contributions to Butler, particularly his longstanding dedication to his patients with eating disorders and his commitment to quality and continuity of patient care. In addition, occupational therapist Anne Doughty, OTR/L, was presented with the 2007 President’s Award for Employee Excellence for her innovative and creative work with patients in the Senior Treatment Program. The hospital also recognized 47 employees with service awards ranging from 10 to 40 years of service.

The meeting concluded with the passing of the gavel to Charles R. Reppucci, a member of Butler Hospital’s Board of Trustees since 1984. Reppucci succeeds Dean T. Holt as chairman of the Board of Trustees. Holt has served as chairman since 2004 and has been a member of the Board since 1996.
