Six Butler Hospital Physicians Named to U.S. News and World Report’s List of Top Doctors in the United States

Six physicians at Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island including psychiatrists Linda Carpenter, MD; Benjamin Greenberg, MD, PhD; Lawrence Price, MDSteven Rasmussen, MD; and neurologists Joseph Friedman, MD; and Stephen Salloway, MD, MS, have been named to the U. S. News & World Report’s list of top doctors in the United States.

All of the Butler physicians are recognized for their contributions to psychiatry and neurology locally, nationally, and internationally. Carpenter and Price are leading experts in mood disorders, including major depression and bipolar disorder, and are involved in research studies developing new treatments for these widespread disorders that are estimated to affect more than 22 million people annually in the United States.

Greenberg and Rasmussen are recognized for their groundbreaking efforts in the identification and treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Once thought to occur in only a small number of people, OCD is now estimated to affect as many as 3 million people in the United States. Rasmussen and Greenberg have led research on innovative treatments for OCD such as Gamma Knife and Deep Brain Stimulation.

Friedman and Salloway are acclaimed experts in the fields of Parkinson’s disease (PD), and Alzheimer’s disease (AD), respectively. Friedman is known for his cutting edge work in treating the behavioral disorders that can occur in people affected by PD including psychosis and depression. Salloway leads some of the latest national and international efforts to develop new ways of effectively diagnosing the presence of AD at its very earliest stages, with the hope that early intervention can greatly slow the progression of the illness.

The goal of U.S. News list is to help guide consumers to top specialists and primary care doctors in their area. The doctors on the list are chosen based on recommendations from their medical peers who view them as being “worthy of referral.” The list, which can be found online at usnews.com, was developed in collaboration with Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., publisher of America’s Top Doctors® and other guides, and was built upon data from Castle Connolly’s Top DoctorsTM.

According to the U.S. News & World Report, the Top Doctors differs from U.S. News rankings like Best Hospitals, Best Diets, and Best Colleges in that no single cardiologist, oncologist, or other specialist can be the No. 1 doctor for all patients with heart disease, cancer, or any other medical condition. Rather, the Top Doctors is a data-rich directory of excellent doctors, coupled with sophisticated searching and sorting tools, to help each consumer find the doctor who’s right for his or her needs.

Butler Hospital is the only private, nonprofit psychiatric and substance abuse hospital serving adults, adolescents and children in Rhode Island and southeastern New England. The flagship hospital for psychiatry at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Butler is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in conducting cutting-edge research and treatment.
