In an event to raise awareness about brain based disorders such as mental illness and sports related brain injuries, Butler Hospital also raised $160,000 for the charitable care fund at the hospital. Nearly 500 attendees filled the ballroom at the Rhode Island Convention Center on September 27 to hear speakers, including National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Pat LaFontaine, and Steven A. Rasmussen, MD, MMS, medical director at Butler Hospital and the Interim Chair and a Professor of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
'Tom and the Lion' was hosted by Butler Hospital in honor of the late Tom Cavanaugh, a Rhode Island native and hockey player in the NHL who developed a severe mental illness, and after battling the illness for several years took his own life in January 2011.
In addition to the supporters of Butler Hospital and the Cavanaugh family, sponsors for 'Tom and the Lion' truly enhanced the success of the fundraiser. Many thanks to the following for issuing their support for the event:
