Benjamin Greenberg, MD, PhD, is a leading expert in anxiety, especially obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) diagnosis, treatment and research. In addition to conventional medication treatments and behavior therapy for OCD, he has led development of the neurosurgical treatment of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for severe, intractable OCD in the U.S. Current projects include a clinical trial of brain stimulation for OCD and studies of where and how DBS actually works in the brain to help people with severe, otherwise untreatable OCD and related illnesses.
Dr. Greenberg graduated from Amherst College, received a PhD in the neurosciences from the University of California, San Diego, did postdoctoral research in neurotoxicology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and then earned a medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He did postgraduate medical training in internal medicine at the New York University VA Medical Center, in neurology, at the Neurological Institute of New York, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, and completed psychiatry residency at Johns Hopkins University. Immediately prior to coming to Butler Hospital, he was chief of the Adult OCD Research Unit at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
