Recognized as a leading expert in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) treatment and research, Dr. Rasmussen
- Is supported by over $1.3 million in research grants that include the study of genetic variants associated with OCD, the safety of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treating highly resistant OCD, and how DBS actually works at the molecular level in the brain to help people with severe OCD.
- Was one of the first psychiatrists in the world to identify OCD as a major mental health problem in the late 1980s. He has an international reputation for his development of diagnostic and treatment procedures for people with OCD. In 2006, he received the Pioneer in Radio surgery Award from the Leksell Society for his ground breaking work in treating
severe OCD with gamma knife surgery.
- Has authored or co-authored over 115 journal articles, book chapters, and abstracts on a wide range of topics
including The epidemiology of OCD, clinical and epidemiological dindings of dignifi cance to neuropharmacologic trials in OCD, clinical features of OCD, OCD in Elderly Patients, stress and depression, neurosurgery for intractable obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression, neurosurgical treatment of psychiatric disorders, and correlates of hoarding in OCD.
- Has made over 70 presentations on such topics as OCD and schizophrenia, gamma knife treatment of OCD, OCD
in children and adolescents, neuromodulation treatments of OCD, new advances in treatment, stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and functional neuroanatomy of OCD.
- Is the recipient of numerous awards including: Invited to join Sigma Xi, an international, multidisciplinary research society; Biologic Science Training
Fellowship, Yale University School of Medicine; Listed as one of The Best Doctors in America (1999 - 2008); Listed as one of the Top 25 Most Cited in Psychiatry 2005-2008; NAMI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award for 2001; Member,
