Biography

Dr. Gerrit van Schalkwyk, MBChB, is a child and adolescent psychiatrist, chief of the Adolescent Unit at Butler Hospital, and an assistant professor of psychiatry and human behavior, clinician educator, at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Gerrit, as he is known, has clinical interests in supporting gender diverse youth, youth with autism spectrum disorders, and young adults.

After graduating from Stellenbosch University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Cape Town, South Africa, he completed his residency and fellowship training at the Yale University School of Medicine, where he developed research expertise in qualitative methods. An assistant editor for the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, Dr. Gerrit loves to teach and is involved in both the residency program and medical school at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
