When you’re ready, we’re ready.

Butler Hospital offers outpatient detoxification services for people who will benefit from medically safe ambulatory withdrawal management from alcohol, heroin, and opioid or other prescription medications. Patients must have transportation back and forth from home, have a supportive home environment, and have no medical or psychiatric conditions that require an inpatient level of care.

For admissions to the Outpatient Detoxification Program call the Partial Hospital Admissions team at (401) 455-6223.

What is required to be admitted to the program?

The following criteria are used to establish a safe and appropriate level of care for medically monitored withdrawal management.

  • You are 18 years or older and be of no imminent risk of danger to self or others.
  • You have minimal risk for severe withdrawal and have no history of delirium tremens (DTs) or seizures in withdrawal.
  • Any other conditions, both medical and co-occurring psychiatric, must be stable and able to be managed in an ambulatory detoxification setting.
  • For at least the first day of treatment, you must be accompanied by a family member or other responsible person, unless determined otherwise by the program physician. This person should present to the program with you and provide you with transportation to and from your outpatient detoxification appointment.
  • You have assistance at home to help you cope with the physical and emotional stressors of detoxification.

Learn More About the Program

You may be recommended for outpatient detoxification through a physician referral or by self-presenting by calling our Patient Assessment Services at (401) 455-6223. These services are covered by most insurances, and we are happy to assist you in determining your health plan’s options.

The outpatient program is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. An initial medical and psychiatric evaluation will determine if the outpatient detoxification program is appropriate for you. You can expect to participate in the program for approximately five visits; the first visit lasting up to four hours. Subsequent visits will be tailored to your needs and will be a minimum of two hours. Each person’s situation is different, so your sessions will be scheduled according to the severity of your withdrawal symptoms and medication management needs. A combination of onsite and home-use medications will be prescribed to safely manage your withdrawal from drugs and/or alcohol.

You will have access to our 24-hour emergency department, to be used outside of program hours. You can access that service by calling (401) 455-6214. If you relapse during the detoxification treatment plan, it’s also important to contact us so we may adjust your treatment plan accordingly. Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., call the program office (contact information will be provided during orientation); after hours call the 24-hour emergency department.

We offer the opportunity for your family to be included in your treatment. Family education is provided, as well as information about other community resources your family members may consider.

At discharge from the outpatient detoxification program, you will be provided with prescriptions for any required medication related to your detox, along with a summary of your aftercare plan for continued treatment. Our Care New England system has all levels of care available to help you easily transition to the next step in your recovery. The plan may include entering the Butler Hospital Partial Hospital Alcohol and Drug Program, one of The Providence Center recovery programs, including Anchor Recovery, or another community-based program. We have strong relationships with many recovery services throughout Rhode Island and will provide you with options that work for you. Recovery is possible and we are here to support your success.
