Description

Participation in the study would involve an initial interview, completion of baseline questionnaire measures and a brief medical screening. If eligible, participants would be assigned by chance to receive either fluoxetine (20 mg.) or a placebo medication for 16 weeks. All participants will also receive five brief individual counseling sessions (one of which is by telephone) and 8 weeks of the transdermal nicotine patch. There would also be follow-up evaluations at the end of individual counseling and at 2, 6 and 12 months later. Participants will be compensated up to $180 for their participation in the follow-up assessments.
