Don’t Let Depression Keep You Down
Helping you move to better physical and mental health
When you’re depressed, it can be challenging to increase your physical activity and adopt a healthy lifestyle. While you may understand the benefits of increasing your physical activity level, you may also be experiencing fatigue and lack of motivation that keep you from getting out there to exercise.
We’d like to introduce you to ways to improve both your physical and mental health. In our Project MOVE research study, we will help you get started with exercise.
It’s time to move to better physical and mental health.
How do you get started?
The study is open to 18 to 65 year old individuals who have depression and are interested in increasing their level of physical activity.
How does the research process work?
We will ask you to visit our offices to participate in an interview and complete questionnaires. At this meeting, we will determine if you are a good match for the study. Our team will be able to assess your level of depression and will also determine if it’s medically safe for you to participate. If chosen, you will participate in the study for six months.
What will you do during the research study?
Once selected you will be randomly assigned to participate in one of three groups:
- A personalized session with a professional on how to start and maintain a safe exercise program.
- Weekly 90 minute class of supervised exercise and health education.
- Weekly 90 minute class of supervised exercise and assistance with how to overcome barriers to exercise.
How long will the research last?
The weekly classes will last for three months. The supervised exercise classes will be scheduled at the Kane Gym on the Butler Hospital campus in Providence, RI. You will work with an exercise physiologist to create a personal plan for you using our exercise equipment. This plan will be designed to help you increase exercise in a step-by-step fashion. The exercise physiologist will also work with you to develop a plan for exercise at home. During this entire process your physical and mental health will be assessed monthly.
For those assigned to groups two and three, our team will call you each month during the second three-month phase of the study for a brief check in on how your exercise program is progressing on your own.
Is there any compensation?
You will be compensated $200 for your time, regardless of which group you are assigned and the amount of exercise completed. We are interested in understanding your response to the program and documenting the results.
