This study is designed to test the use of a smartphone app to help people transition off opioid medications, used either as part of medication assisted treatment for addiction or for pain management. Participants who are interested in discontinuing their opiate medication in the next six months may be eligible to participate. Participants will complete four to five interviews over four months, which will ask about their experiences with opioids. Participants will also be asked to use the smartphone app (called BetterOFF) for three months and provide feedback on how a smartphone app might aid in the process of transitioning off opioids.
Participants will receive a $50 cash gift card for completing each of the one hour interviews.
Who is eligible for the study?
Participants must be age 18 years or older. They must also be medically stable, interested in coming off their opiate medication, and use a smartphone.
How will I determine if a smartphone app would be beneficial to my process?
Researchers will load the smartphone app onto your phone, demonstrate how the app works, and ask you to use it over the course of the three month study. Researchers will ask questions about what you like about it and suggestions for what would make it more helpful to support your goal to stop using opiate medications.
How much time is involved?
To determine if you are eligible, you will participate in a screening interview over the phone, which lasts approximately 10 minutes. If you meet study criteria, you will be scheduled for a one hour interview at the Butler Hospital campus in Providence at our research department offices. At the conclusion of this initial visit, you will schedule the rest of the study visits, some of which can be done by phone. You are responsible for your own transportation; public bus transportation is available to our campus. You will be compensated $50 for each study visit.
If you’re interested in participating, complete the form above or call the research team at (401) 455-6653. You will be asked a series of questions to determine if you meet criteria for eligibility. If eligible, research staff will arrange your study appointment.
