Study Information:

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation as a Novel Treatment for Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Study Information:

The goal of this study is to find out how non-invasive brain stimulation, specifically Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), effects obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in postpartum women. The postpartum period can increase the risk of developing OCD. Research shows that 2–24% of women may develop new OCD symptoms after giving birth, and 8–70% of women with a history of OCD may experience a worsening of symptoms during this time. TMS is an FDA-cleared treatment for OCD that is considered safe for breastfeeding mothers, making it a potential alternative to medications. Accelerated TMS protocols may help reduce OCD symptoms more quickly during this critical period.

Participants in this study will receive 10 days of an experimental TMS protocol. Participants must also be willing to undergo brain imaging (Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI) before and after they receive TMS. The main benefits of the study are to help researchers develop better interventions for OCD in the postpartum period. You may or may not see improvement in your OCD symptoms if you participate in this study.
