Visitor Restrictions are Currently in Place at Butler, Kent, and Women & Infants Hospitals

Care New England is focused on providing excellent clinical care to our patients and keeping our workforce safe. Recently, the Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH), released visitation guidelines for all health care facilities to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on our patients, visitors and staff and have implemented the following guidelines for any visitors:

  • Any person feeling sick with the following systems will be asked to not visit:
    • Cough
    • Fever
    • Chills
    • Stuffy nose
    • Runny nose
    • Sore throat

We anticipate that there will be updates to visitation restrictions in the coming weeks as we receive additional guidance from the RIDOH. Click here to learn more >>

Butler Hospital: Leading the Way in a Pandemic

Founded in 1844, Butler Hospital is the state's only non-profit, free-standing psychiatric hospital providing adults, seniors, and adolescents specialized assessment and treatment for all major psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse. Our programs include inpatient, outpatient, and partial hospital programs, as well as support groups and various levels and specialties of brain and mental health needs. Butler is also a major affiliate of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, involved in training a wide range of the next generation of behavioral health providers, and is a nationally and internationally known center in behavioral health research where research developments are routinely integrated into clinical programs. 

The COVID-19 pandemic presented new challenges to all involved in providing health care focusing on how to provide care that was needed in ways that focused on a quality experience, but also ways that optimized safety for both patients and providers. The pandemic prompted communities around the nation and globe to think differently about how they can best provide care to patients, using telehealth and minimizing face-to-face contact in many instances. The transition at Butler may be called “easier” than at other health care providers as we had already started to provide some virtual service and were actively planning to expand these services. Butler’s specialized services brought patients needing our care onto the campus from across the region, in order to create the best care plan our medical professionals align with patients on a mix of in-person and telephone/televideo interactions. While we cannot minimize the impact of COVID-19 on how we provide healthcare, our experience allowed us to quickly implement programs that optimized both quality and safety. While the pandemic has shown a longing for a sense of community, we can often accommodate this need in part with technology. Here at Butler, one of the ways that we are using COVID-19 to our advantage is to accelerate the use of technology to allow virtual interactions much more broadly where indicated. You can now receive the same thoughtful, expert level of personal care but in many programs virtually, making of geographic location or even your busy schedule less of a barrier to superior care. 

There are many instances where we still believe that in-person time and attention are the best option for our patients during any designated point(s) in their care with us. During COVID-19 and beyond, we keep patient access to the proper care as our first and foremost goal. We don’t want anything to get in the way of someone seeking help. During the pandemic, things look a bit different here, but our compassionate and knowledgeable staff remain experts in this work. Our Butler teams are working hard to make sure that in-person care is safe for both patients and themselves, despite the fact that things might look a bit different. Some examples of how we have shifted the way work may include: your former or new group meetings or support teams will now be smaller, with no more than five in a group in-person at any given time. People may sit further apart, and a wave or nod replaces a handshake. While a welcome smile may be behind a mask, and face shields may seem like a barrier, we are still the same team of caring human beings, here to understand each patient’s unique needs. We make sure that physical distancing for us here at Butler certainly does not mean there is distance from proper care. While interacting with patients, we are also in lockstep with the governor’s and CDC’s recommendations and have ensured that our staff is appropriately protected when interacting with any COVID-19 or suspected potential COVID19 patients. In fact, patients often remark that they appreciate the precautions being taken, given their own fears and concerns about what is taking place in the world around us.
