Alcohol & Drug Partial Hospital Program

Alcohol & Drug Partial Program

The Alcohol and Drug Partial Hospital Program helps you conquer substance abuse through understanding the causes of addiction and by developing strategies for overcoming the need for alcohol or drugs. Program hours are Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. and ending at 2:00 p.m. The intake occurs the first day of the program with an arrival time of 7:30 a.m. At the end of the day, you return home to practice the interpersonal and coping skills learned in the program.

The Alcohol & Drug Partial Hospital program provides treatment tailored to your needs in a supportive, structured environment. Each morning, you will attend a series of groups designed to teach healthy recovery skills. On a typical day, you will participate in two groups in the morning and two groups in the afternoon. Breaks and individual appointments are scheduled between groups. There are two - half hour breaks during which lunch can be taken depending on your individual appointment schedule. These breaks are from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 12:45 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. You will also meet individually with your physician and your counselor before returning home in the afternoon. The program is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and is closed on weekends and holidays.

Program Highlights

The Alcohol & Drug Partial Hospital offers evidence-based treatment for people dealing with substance use. By working with you and your family members, program staff carefully evaluate your individual substance abuse issues while helping you to learn new skills that are most supportive of your recovery. Participating in the partial hospital treatment program for substance use enables you to develop new coping strategies over time. These strategies strengthen your ability and confidence when dealing with situations that trigger substance use. The partial hospital setting also provides the opportunity for you to return to your own surroundings in the evenings and discuss any challenges you may have encountered when you return to the hospital the next day.

Family Involvement

The involvement of your family and others who play a significant role in your life is very important to the success of your treatment and recovery. However, no contact with your family or others will be made without your signed consent, except in the case of an emergency. Family education and support groups are part of the weekly schedule, and individual family sessions are available by appointment. Additional support groups offered outside of the partial hospital program are also available on the Butler campus.

Learn More About the Program

How long will I attend the program?
The length of time you spend in the program is based on your individual need. We have found patients benefit the most from spending five days in the program and by making their health and recovery a priority during treatment.
What is a typical day like?
On a typical day, you will attend four treatment groups, including cognitive-behavioral, educational, and skills-building groups. You will receive daily individual sessions with both your doctor and your substance use counselor. If medications are prescribed, your doctor and a member of the pharmacy staff will teach you about the medications. You will also work with your treatment team to develop a relapse prevention plan.
What kind of groups will I attend?

The ADP offers group education on a range of topics to help you learn the skills needed to take to overcome your need for alcohol and drugs. These include:

  • Managing emotions
  • Relapse prevention
  • Stages of change
  • Drink/drug refusal skills
  • Family education and support
  • Goal setting
  • Functional analysis
  • Spirituality
  • Alcohol/drug discussion
  • Medical education on addictions
  • Understanding irrational thinking
  • Assertiveness
  • Mindfulness/relaxation
What should I bring with me?
  • Picture identification
  • Insurance card
  • List of current medications
  • Name and contact information for current outpatient providers
  • Lunch (or you may use the cafeteria services)
  • Many people find it helpful to bring a notebook
What happens when I'm ready to leave the program?
During your partial hospital treatment, a discharge planning team will work with you, your doctor, and your treatment team, to determine the most helpful plan for your individual needs. Before leaving the program, a discharge instruction sheet, which includes follow-up plans and outpatient appointments, will be provided. Additionally, any prescriptions you may need will be provided to you by your physician.
