It is not uncommon for people who struggle with addictions to have an underlying psychiatric illness, such as depression, anxiety, OCD, or post traumatic stress disorder. This is referred to as a dual-diagnosis, or sometimes a co-occurring disorder.
Dual diagnosis/co-occurring disorders mean that you may have a psychiatric disorder and a substance abuse disorder. Dual diagnosis treatment units, like the Alcohol and Drug Inpatient Treatment Unit at Butler, are specifically designed to meet the needs of patients who may have significant active substance dependency, significant active psychiatric illnesses or both.
